NotebookLM – Feature Requests and Bugs

I am listing my requests and bug reports for NotebookLM. Simply writing them here won’t convey them to the developers or the community, so I am also posting them sequentially on the Discord community.

Feature Requests (more to come)

Report and video creation cannot be canceled halfway through. (If you wish to customize them, make sure to click the pencil icon in NotebookLM Studio.)

Ruby (Japanese): Because Google Docs, which is used for source uploads, does not support furigana (ruby text), one must take steps, such as converting Word documents containing furigana into a plain text format.

Output Cancellation: Currently, report and video generation cannot be canceled midway. Although this process usually only takes a few minutes, it would be great to have a cancel function. It would be even better if usage counts were not tallied upon canceling an accidentally started generation. (Please note: If you want to customize the output content, you must click the pencil icon in NotebookLM Studio. Be careful, as clicking the “Video Explanation” icon itself will immediately start the video explanation creation.)

Fact-Checking: The video explanations provide lively commentary, but occasionally, they “overstate” things out of enthusiasm, such as claiming something is “not at all present” when “a small amount is present.” It tends to use words like “absolutely” or “100%.” While the video explanation can be generated with just a click, it is time-consuming to correct the video if even one piece of information in the result is incorrect. We would like the script to be fact-checked before the output is generated.

Mind Map: Currently, the mind map can only be output as an image. It would be good if the output could also be saved in Markdown format.

Report Output Format: The report output is “formatted,” but for some reason, it is not in Markdown format, so I would like it to be converted to Markdown format.

Voice Customization: At present, the Japanese output voice seems to only have two options: “Female” and “(Young) Male.” In English, there is also a male voice with a lower pitch. Being able to specify the speaking style and age would broaden the range of expression. If the podcast voices could also be customized, we could even have two characters from a story discuss the story itself. That would be fun.

Known Bugs

As of November 5, 2025, text files encoded in Shift_JIS become garbled when added as a source. These files must be converted to UTF-8 before uploading. (• Discord | “Japanese Shift JIS text is garbled” | NotebookLM)
